Do we need another chair? Design to stand for, not to sit onThe New York Times' Alice Rawsthorn implores anyone considering designing or making something to show at the Milan Furniture Fair to ask themselves. ‘Does the world need another chair?’ In other words, there is a difference between making things which look good, and making things which do good. At a time when sustainability is imperative, not discretionary, how can ‘design’ and designers change to become creators and enablers of social good and a sustainable world? Host: Jonathan Glancey, Architecture and design correspondent at The Guardian, formerly architecture & design correspondent at the Independent, contributor to numerous architectural magazines, including Architectural Review, Blueprint, Building Design, a frequent broadcaster and author of several books including ‘New British Architecture’ and ‘The Story of Architecture’ Speakers

The future of architectureArchitects have been adjusting to worsening times since the housing crash as far back as 2008, though the coalition’s reduction of publicly funded development and construction will inevitably result in further job losses. It’s hard to ask for special dispensation for architects, when the current economic climate affects so many other parts of the economy, but good design can save money and create value. Architects can help design leaner, better, low carbon solutions. Just what’s required in difficult times and in the face of the enormous challenge to create a sustainable, low carbon built environment? (which won’t wait until the good times return). Host: Paul Finch, Chair of CABE, former commissioner and deputy chair of CABE, former chair of CABE’s design review panel, programme director of the World Architecture Festival, editor emeritus of Architectural Review and Architects’ Journal Speakers

Whose community is it anyway? With a new perspective on planning and the built environment, where local communities will be writing the plans for their neighbourhoods and developers will have to start building what those communities want, three leading thinkers discuss who owns neighbourhoods and what they value. How will local politicians react to changing power relationships, the importance of memory and emotion in planning, communities as developers and development partners and funders? These are just a few of the issues all the stakeholders and participants will have to understand in the new order of things. Host: Chris Brown, CEO, Igloo Regeneration, director Isis Waterside Regeneration, and the Home Group housing association, a former chair of the RICS Regeneration panel, a CABE Regional Design Ambassador and a member of the Princes Foundation projects panel Speakers
