AURUBIS ARCHITECTURAL is a result of the purchase of Luvata Rolled Products, formerly Outokumpu - which started producing copper products for roofs, facades and other applications in 1940. With over 140 years experience, Aurubis is now the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler.
AURUBIS ARCHITECTURAL is committed to developing this long heritage and to redefining copper for contemporary design with the ongoing development of its ‘Nordic’ surfaces, forms and systems for architectural applications.
Surfaces in the range include Nordic Green and Nordic Blue variable intensities of pre-patination, developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. There are no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets, enabling them to be used for long-strip installation techniques. Other surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ and Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper with either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment. Copper alloys include Nordic Brass and the innovative Nordic Royal - an alloy of copper and aluminium with a long-lasting golden colour.
NEW Nordic Blue Living 3
AURUBIS ARCHITECTURAL – part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler – has launched a new pre-patinated surface as part of its Nordic Blue range, giving designers even more freedom to realise their designs in copper. ‘Nordic Blue Living 3’ has been developed to give a specific intensity of blue patina but with a distinctive green hue. Using a carefully controlled, factory process, the Nordic Blue and Nordic Green ranges offer variable intensities of pre-patination, developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. The factory process can be accurately controlled so that, as well as the solid blue or green patina colours, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material. There are no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets, enabling them to be used for long-strip installation techniques.
NORDIC BLUE – pre-patinated copper
In marine climates, the natural copper patina contains some copper chloride giving it more of a blue colour and this is emulated with Nordic Blue. Using a similar factory process to Nordic Green, pre-oxidised copper is sprayed with specifically formulated copper compounds to create the desired patina colours and heat-treated to chemically bind them to the copper. As well as the solid blue colour, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised material behind.
NORDIC ROYAL – copper alloy
Nordic Royal™ is an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc which is very stable. It has a thin protective oxide layer containing all three alloy elements when produced. As a result, the surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the elements to give a matt finish.
NORDIC BROWN – pre-oxidised copper
Nordic Brown™ products are pre-oxidised at Luvata’s factory to give straightaway the brown surface to both faces that otherwise develops over time in the environment: both light and dark versions are available. Nordic Brown™ is useful to minimise hand and other construction marks which can occur for a short time after installation with ‘bright’ standard copper. But light and dark versions can be combined – perhaps with other finishes (such as Nordic Standard, as on the project shown) – to create various visual effects.
NORDIC GREEN – pre-patinated copper
Nordic Green™ Living offers designers unparalleled design freedom and the ability to determine the type and intensity of patina for each project. The factory process can be accurately controlled so that, as well as the solid green patina colour, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material. There are no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets.
