Accoya Cladding and Shutters at West Lodge School
The two schools at the West Lodge Primary School complex in Pinner, north west London, needed to be amalgamated and requested a design and construction which could combine the two buildings as well as create an amusing development to suit the schools. The project needed a material able to combine stability, durability and strength without jeopardizing the aesthetics of the architecture. LOM Architecture and Design, who were commissioned on this project, worked closely with Russwood Ltd, a Scottish supplier of high quality, sustainable timber products, to produce an eye-catching arrangement of their factory coated Accoya cladding. With original buildings dating from 1970, it was important to conceive a new design that could modernize the school to make it look attractive and fun for the children. Bringing colours to the façade was the solution. The natural beauty and versatility of wood was the ideal material. Accoya® wood, the most durable wood possible, perfect for outdoor use and also perfect for coating was the answer. Accoya® wood is the world-leading solution with properties that match those of the best tropical hardwood. It has been thoroughly tested for dimensional stability, durability, UV resistance, paint retention and in-ground conditions to ensure optimal performance. It is so reliable that for many years it has been – and continues to be – used by scientists as the benchmark against which other treatments and modifications are measured. Plus, Accoya® is manufactured using a non-toxic treatment and uses fast growing timber from sustainable sources. It therefore sets a great environmentally friendly example for the youngsters.
Accoya windows at Deal Hospital
The Victoria Hospital, Deal, UK, looked to Accoya wood for replacement sash windows two and a half years ago. In the first phase, 103 sash windows were replaced, using approximately 25m3 of Accoya wood, finished with an opaque white coating. The National Health Service was so impressed with the results and with the performance of Accoya that they have commissioned a further 91 sash windows for the second phase, replacing PVC windows. The windows are supplied by Dempsey Dyer.
Accoya Clading, Decking & Structural Beams at Haven
The client’s vision for this house and boathouse at Horning on the Norfolk Broads in the UK was to provide an exemplary building that is sustainable and graceful in design, complementing and enhancing the setting and providing a legacy for future generations. The extensive use of wood cladding and decking were key elements of LSI architects’ design. However, given that ‘The Haven’ is in a flood zone, surrounded on three sides by water and constantly exposed to a high moisture content in the air, LSI needed to find a wood that they could be confident would deliver durability, dimensional stability and aesthetics. Accoya wood presented the perfect answer. Accoya, supplied by International Timber, was used for cladding and decking. The glue laminated wood for the curved rear screen was made in the Netherlands and the screen itself was manufactured by Newnham & Abel Ltd. It was hand finished with a protective merbau-coloured coating from WoodGuard by Guard Industrie and the same finish was factory applied to the cladding.
