News release

UBM acquires Ecobuild

It has been announced today that Ecobuild, the world’s biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment, has been acquired by UBM, publishers of leading built environment titles Building, Building Design and Property Week, and organisers of UK events such as Interiors, KBB, BSEC and Sleep, as well as international events including Expobuild in China, and the Concrete show in Brazil, and owners of ABI, amongst several other products serving the sector.

The Ecobuild team - including managing director, David Wood, event director Moira Edwards, and sales director, Michael Costain – will continue to manage the event when it transfers to UBM’s offices at the beginning of August.   Michael Costain will become Event Director for Ecobuild 2013.

Commenting on the acquisition, UBM Built Environment CEO, Adrian Barrick, stressed UBM’s commitment to maintaining continuity.  ‘I am delighted that we are joining forces with Ecobuild. It is a fantastic event, and just what both the industry and government needs in order to drive forward the sustainable construction agenda, the strategic importance of which was highlighted in the recent Low Carbon Construction Action Plan launched by business & enterprise minister Mark Prisk.’

‘There is a natural fit between Ecobuild and UBM. The combination of Ecobuild and our magazines, web- and mobile sites and specialist live and virtual events will allow professionals to meet and discuss best practice all the year round. We will also be able to offer all our customers the best possible value through our combined offering. I can’t wait for March 2012.’

Ecobuild’s managing director, David Wood, agrees.  ‘This is a great opportunity for Ecobuild to develop to an even greater degree, and to capitalise on the strength of UBM’s built environment portfolio to enhance the event even further, and to widen its reach both in the UK and further afield.  Of course we’re delighted to be part of the UBM family and excited by all the opportunities that will bring for Ecobuild and its customers, but right now we’re very much focused on planning for another great event next March.’

UBM will use its global network to take Ecobuild to new markets, starting with the launch of Ecobuild China in March 2012 alongside Expobuild, the leading, 19-year-old construction products event in Shanghai.

Ecobuild will take place next year on Tuesday 20 – Thursday 22 March at London’s ExCeL.  Over 1,500 exhibitors and over 60,000 visitors are expected to attend, with the event’s footprint continuing to grow by an anticipated 25% to occupy 80,000 square metres.
