Response to the Budget

Wednesday 22 November

ecobuild owner, Futurebuild Events Ltd, has welcomed today’s budget announcement that at least £44bn of funding is being made available to support the housing market over the next five years, with the aim of building 300,000 new homes per year by the mid-2020s.

Martin Hurn, managing director of Futurebuild Events Ltd, said: “Finding a solution to the housing crisis has never been more pressing. First time buyers are finding it more difficult than ever to get onto the property ladder and there’s an urgent need for affordable homes. The Chancellor’s commitment to unlocking the dream of home ownership is welcome but requires a drastic shift in attitudes.

“The key to achieving this is to embrace a radically new approach to housebuilding; one that delivers affordable, high quality homes, quickly. As the number one event for forward thinkers in the built environment, ecobuild is committed to bringing innovative solutions to the housing crisis to life. The 2018 edition of the event will feature three full-scale builds, which each showcasing cutting-edge approaches to providing high quality affordable housing, with much shorter build times than traditional construction methods.

“One area where this revolutionary approach to housebuilding will be on show at ecobuild is in the Offsite district, brought to you by Explore Offsite. Offsite has been described as the future direction of construction technology and the opportunities it provides both the public and private sector are vast. Affordable homes can be provided much more quickly using offsite technology and this method results in not only lower costs for buyers but also less waste.

“A vital step in ensuring that the goal of delivering these homes can be achieved is addressing the skills shortage in UK construction. The £34m investment in this area is welcome, but there must be a focus on equipping workers with the relevant skills to progress the growth of offsite construction.”
