The Timber district is supported by:

  • British Woodworking Federation
  • Confederation of Timber Industries
  • Structural Timber Association
  • Timber Trade Federation
  • TRADA
  • Wood For Good

Part of the 2018 futurebuild districts...

One of construction’s traditional materials has become a focus for building sustainably, higher and using advanced methods and technologies, and the new Timber district explored the possibilities. Its Timber Talks seminar programme, developed with the Structural Timber Association, featured presentations by representatives from leading industry bodies, including TRADA and Wood for Good. Visitors were able to find exhibitors including RCM and Glavloc. And there’s guidance on hand in TRADA’s bookshop, the Structural Timber Association Pavilion, an Ask the Expert facility and the Launch Pad pavilion, which offered support to SMEs and start-ups.

Timber
  1. This session will highlight organisations that have successfully worked with the UK’s housing associations and social landlords to provide high quality buildings that cater for specific customer needs, enhance local communities and provide the best in sustainable affordable housing.
  2. This session will cover large and small-scale projects – in both footprint and cost. Our speakers have displayed a clear understanding of how to apply timber technology to deliver a sustainable, energy efficient and cost-effective contemporary building.

  3. The pressure on the healthcare sector is huge. This keynote session will present case studies of projects that have used offsite technology to create a new facility, upgrade or extension in a seamless way, on-time and on-budget working in a sensitive, inclusive and collaborative fashion.

  4. This session will highlight outstanding examples of UK construction that have integrated timber technology as a major component part of its success. The speakers have proved that they have used timber with skill and ingenuity to create a sustainable, low-carbon building showcasing the strengths of timber.

  1. Taking in volume construction and smaller developments, this session highlights those creating a new generation of sustainable, energy efficient and desirable places to live.  The presented projects can cater for mass market consumption or individuals and have all displayed high levels of technical skill, using timber effectively and economically to create places to live and work.

  2. Choosing to build your own home and/or employing a company that specialises in unique one-off projects is complicated, exciting and a huge responsibility. This session highlights the best custom-built properties on an individual or small community basis.

  3. The Priority School Building Programme is set to run until 2021 with the aim of rebuilding or refurbishing a total of 537 primary, secondary and special education needs schools across England. The Education keynote session creates a platform for construction clients, architects, engineers and contractors to come together and discuss the latest offsite solutions across the education sector.

  4. This session will present both large and small-scale projects – in both footprint and budget. Our speakers have displayed a clear understanding of how to apply timber technology to deliver a sustainable, energy efficient and cost-effective contemporary building.

  5. Speakers in this session have showcased how timber as a building material – either structurally, externally or internally – can be exploited to its maximum potential to drive forward the concept of low-carbon building design.

Timber
  1. Delivering rapid and robust energy efficient buildings, with superior insulation, structural strength and airtightness - SIP systems are used for walls, roofs and floors. Structural Insulated Panels offer extremely high thermal performance throughout the lifecycle of the building, whilst minimising wall thickness.

  2. Modern timber frame structures are precision-engineered, strong and durable. The build method relies on a factory manufactured timber frame as a means of structural support - carrying the loads imposed by the floors and roofs, before transmitting them to the foundations, which can be built at a lower cost due to the buildings being lightweight.

  3. Traditional building processes are noted to be highly wasteful in terms of materials and figures indicated that around 32% of landfill waste comes from the construction and demolition of buildings. However, CLT, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and glued laminated timber – as offsite manufactured solutions, can dramatically improve these statistics, producing significantly lower amounts of wastage, due to the factory-controlled methods of ordering and cutting materials to size and recycling far easier to implement in a factory environment.
